Uber Eats lights up Alberta with home cannabis delivery

The Uber Eats-Leafly partnership for cannabis delivery in Alberta follows a successful launch in B.C. last year and Ontario in 2022, which was the first time globally that cannabis delivery was available on a major third-party delivery platform.

Thanks to a blazing new partnership between Uber Eats and Leafly, Albertans 18 years or older can now enjoy the convenience of cannabis delivery.

Local licensed retailers will be at the helm, ensuring products reach customers with the highest standards of safety and compliance.

“Over the last few years, we have invested heavily in our delivery offering and selection has expanded tremendously. Uber Eats has grown quickly to become a versatile platform usable by diverse businesses large and small,” said Klaas Knieriem, General Manager of Grocery and Retail for Uber Eats in Canada.

“More Albertans are accessing legal cannabis than ever before. We are partnering with industry leaders like Leafly to help retailers offer safe, convenient options for people in Alberta to purchase legal cannabis for delivery directly to their homes. This will help reduce impaired driving and improve road safety.”

Yoko Miyashita, CEO of Leafly, is equally excited about the partnership: “We are thrilled to continue our work with Uber Eats to help licensed retailers bring safe, legal cannabis to people across Canada. Leafly has been empowering Canada’s cannabis marketplace for more than five years and it is exciting to expand this partnership to Alberta and help licensed cannabis retailers grow their businesses.”

To order cannabis via Uber Eats, open the app, select “cannabis,” then confirm your age and browse the menu. Be sure to place your order within the delivery radius and from there, you’ll be notified of the delivery time. A provincially licensed retailer staff member will then deliver your purchase, verifying your age and sobriety upon arrival.

This joint venture arrives in Alberta following a successful launch in British Columbia last year. The partnership between Uber Eats and Leafly first sparked in Ontario in 2022, making history as the first time globally that cannabis delivery was available on a major third-party delivery platform.

The first cannabis retailers blazing the trail on the platform in Alberta are Dank Cannabis, Ogden Cannabis, Oil & Grass Cannabis, Oakridge Cannabis in Calgary and NUMO Cannabis in Edmonton.

This partnership aims to help licensed retailers connect with existing cannabis users safely and conveniently. Research from Public First indicates that some cannabis users drive after consumption, with 1 in 7 (14 per cent) admitting to driving within two hours of consuming cannabis.
